GCSE French : the exam
Speaking: Weighting: 25% Length of exam: 12 mins (H) 10 mins (F) Examined by class teacher. Takes place in the scout hut.
Part One: Role Play Prepare 5 questions or answers on 2 different role plays with the teacher.
Part Two: General Conversation Have a conversation on two of the topics below (the WJEC will specify one of the topics on the day and the candidate may choose at least one other). 1. Homelife 2. Freetime 3. Holidays 4. Education 5. Home town and region The conversation will normally provide an opportunity for candidates to talk about past, present and future events; candidates will be encouraged to express personal opinions.
Coursework: Weighting: 25% Length of exam: 1 lesson per piece of coursework Examined in class. Marked by class teacher.
Prepare 5 pieces of coursework. Must all be submitted by beginning of March. Coursework is prepared in class, then written over the course of one lesson, under exam conditions with only a dictionary for reference.

Ecris à ton ami français sur un stage de formation professionnelle que tu as fait. (Write about your work experience)

5. Ecris sur la santé/comment garder la forme (Write about health/how to stay fit and healthy)
Foundation Coursework:
1. Ecris une lettre. Ecris au moins 10 phrases sur toi, par exemple: tes passetemps, ta famille, tes amis, ta ville/ton village (Write a letter – at least 10 sentences about yourself, for example, yourfamily, your friends, your town/village)
2. Ecris au moins 10 phrases sur ce que tu fais pendant la semaine (Write at least 10 sentences on what you do during the week)

Listening and Responding Weighting: 25% Length of exam:35 mins (F) 45 mins (H) External exam paper Held in a classroom in school No dictionaries allowed
The exam is designed to allow you to show that you are able to understand spoken French in a variety of situations. Each item will be heard twice. You are allowed five minutes to study the questions before the tape is played. The paper includes box-ticking, multiple choice and matching. The kind of items you will hear are public announcements, instructions and requests, interviews, news items, short dialogues and monologues such as weather forecasts.
Reading and Responding Weighting: 25% Length of exam: 35 mins (F) 45 mins (H) External exam paper Held in the gym No dictionaries allowed.
The exam is designed to allow you to show that you are able to understand and respond to written French in different styles and contexts and from different sources. The paper includes box-ticking, multiple choice and matching. The kind of reading items you will see in the paper are written public notices and signs, magazines or newspaper articles and personal information such as that found in letter, notes, e-mails or messages.
